Day 6 - Cades Cove, Smoky Mt. NP

Tuesday, June 5, 2018
Posted from: Imagination Mountain Campground - Cosby, TN
Miles Traveled: 100
Total Miles: 1136

We woke up a little earlier today and drove to Cades Cove. We have read that this is the most popular area of the park and traffic can back up for hours. The good news is the really busy season has not started yet.

Cades Cove is an old mountain town. They have restored several buildings including houses, barns, and churches. You drive on an eleven mile one way loop around the town. There is a visitor center about half way around where you can walk around and into several old buildings like a working mill that was making corn meal while we were there.

The Methodist Church. There are two doors because some churches separated genders. This one never did, but they used the building plans from one that did. Clearly a very frugal people those Methodists.
While walking around at the visitor center, the boys led us down a path with bear warnings and a lot of water. Hmm.

We didn’t see bears, but we had to creatively cross the water a few times. Caleb wanted to hold my hand for balance...poor kid. He doesn’t yet realize how uncoordinated his mother is. We stayed dry much to my amazement.

We did end up seeing a Black Bear on this path. It was off in the grass and you couldn’t see it well, but people were stopped and doing less than intelligent things to get a view of the poor thing. The animals are actually the part of parks I have grown to dislike due to the bad behavior they cause (to no fault of their own, of course).

After driving through the Cades Cove loop, we stopped at the picnic area for lunch. We all quickly agreed that this was the best lunch location we have EVER been to. It was oddly peaceful even though it was full of people. There was water to play in, and lots of wildlife to watch (of both the non-human and human kind).

Caleb enjoying his sandwich as quick as he can so he can get in the water.

It wouldn't be a proper vacation day without a bit of road construction.

Caleb forgot his sweatshirt, so he wore mine. We all had on grey sweatshirts today. We called ourselves the Blah Family. The weather has been nearly perfect. Sweatshirt weather until about 1:00 pm and then warm enough to swim by 4:00 pm.

Walking just a few steps on a trail in the campground and you are in the national park.

The trail by the campground was beautiful.

There is a bridge out at one point. You have to walk along the long board that is visible in the upper left corner of this picture. Eek!

The kids watching a movie in theoutdoor movie theater.

Marshmallow time!
