Day 11 - St. Pete / Tampa

Friday, June 16, 2023
Posted from: Orlando NW/Orange Blossom KOA, Apopka, FL
Miles driven: 100
Total trip miles: 2256

We had a nice slow sleep-in kind of morning. It was extremely muggy outside this morning, so we didn’t really feel like doing much anyway.

We haven’t update our map yet on this vacation, so we took a few minutes to do that this morning.

^South Carolina (it’s precision work)

^ Georgia

^Florida

^Only four states left!!!

We took off this morning towards Tampa. I have a co-worker, Eric, who has relocated here from Des Moines, and he invited us to visit.

On the way, we crossed the Skyway Bridge. The Skyway Bridge is a modern marvel. Not maybe as well known or iconic as the Golden Gate or other large bridges, but just as impressive.

Interesting story: A large portion of it collapsed in 1980. The bridge supports did not have anything surrounding them to prevent a direct hit, which is exactly happened when a barge hit a support and collapsed a large section. As a result, most bridges across the United States now have structures protecting their support columns.

It cost $1.50 in tolls to drive across one way.

We arrived at Eric’s, had some pizza, and Caleb couldn’t wait to jump in the pool! He is a fish and really liked this pool (okay, we all liked this pool!).

And you couldn’t beat the view!

But this table…I mean, for real. It was incredible. And so perfect for this house! (Perhaps it would look a little odd in Iowa.)

Eric took us down to their community beach, we we grabbed a quick selfie with our awesome host. Thanks for a great day, Eric!

These communities are beautiful.

Back over the Skyway Bridge to get home.

Tonight we tried to meet up with one of Grace’s friends who lives close, but the timing and logistics didn’t work out, which was a big bummer. :(

We decided to go to the John’s Pass area. It is a boardwalk with lots of shopping and restaurants. We chose one with live music on a dock and we were not disappointed.

Yes!!!

A random pirate ship floated past. Seemed normal.

The food was great! (All good pictures for this entire trip are thanks to Grace…she reminds me to take pictures or she takes them.)

The sky gave us a show again tonight.

Another large boat.

I think we all agree that the little floating tiki huts were our favorite little vessel. This was a big one and not as fun to watch. I guess o one took a picture of the smaller ones that looked like they were going to sink at  any moment if someone made a sudden move. Very entertaining.

This place also provides an opportunity to ride of this pretty amazing shark boat. Kinda sad we missed that, but I’m sure we will all recover from our disappointment.

We will close tonight on a picture of the kinds of things you give up to instead have a truck and camper to go on family vacations…oh and maybe the cost of three college educations (I’m still not sure we have reached the cost of one of these). I’m okay with this trade.
